                The Executive Chart Book

Overview:

The Executive Chart Book is a report for members of trade associations who wish to benchmark their company’s value, profit, cost, and operating performance with other members of their association. The Executive Chart Book is designed to satisfy the information needs and presentation requirements of today’s wholesale-distribution owner-executive.  It is not a legacy report containing table-after-table of ratios and colorless graphs.  Value Associates’ Executive Chart Book offers association members new and innovative content presented through annotated graphical and tabular tools

Content:

Performance measures are built around Stern Steward, Inc.’s Economic Value Added (EVAÔ) model for measuring performance and managing a business. (EVA measures the increase (decrease) in the equity value of a company and the wealth of its owners during the year.)

EVA-based measures drill down to ratios from the Strategic Profit Model (i.e., the Dupont Model), Activity Based Costing, and a Personnel Productivity and Compensation Model — The Executive Chart Book contains these ratios and other ratios organized around an easy to understand framework.

Benchmarking Gap Analysis answers questions such as “How many too many employees does my company employ?” or “How much too much does my company have invested in inventories and receivables?

Benchmarking gaps are identified in graphs and tables; more importantly, gaps are also evaluated in words.  Business functions and ratios are identified as being “Strong” “Good” “Average” “Fair” “Weak”.  The Executive Chart Book offers users the choice of evaluating their company’s performance in words, numbers or graphs.

Style:

Two and three dimensional color graphs are used to clarify relationships and highlight benchmarking gaps.

Graphs are “Board-Presentation Ready” even though they will be presented to individuals other than the Board-of-Directors, that is, executives, managers and employees,

Tables include benchmarking numbers from the user’s peer groups plus text statements identify the company’s performance as being  “Strong” “Good” “Average” “Fair” “Weak” relative to one of the peer groups.

The Executive Chart Book starts with a survey form that may be submitted in paper or electronic form.  (The electronic form has built-in data validity checks.)  All data is computer and manually checked for accuracy using addition, cross-reference and range checks. Graphs and tables present quartile statistics (i.e., Upper Quartile, Median, Lower Quartile) for up to six peer groups.  Performance evaluations (i.e., “Strong” “Good” “Average” “Fair” “Weak”) are based on quintiles … a company’s ratio in the top 20% being evaluated as “Strong,” the next 20% as being “Good” ... lowest 20% as "Weak," etc.

Participants receive both a hardcopy report (pictured above) and an Excel database of their data and comparative data; the Excel database may be used to generate customized tables and graphs using Excel' built in capabilities.
